The days of summer are certainly upon us. Although there\u2019s been much\nrain and many storms, we\u2019ve also been truly blessed with some wonderful days as\nwell.   Through it all, we need not look\nfar to see how God provides in so many ways. \nThe beauty of His creation, helping hands in time of need, the gift of\nfamily and friends, and our skills, talents, and treasures to care for all are\never present.  Summer is the time God\ngives us to refresh ourselves from the daily grind of our work and commitments,\nand to enjoy the fruits of our labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As work is a right and blessing in and of itself, we mustn\u2019t forget\nthat rest and relaxation is vital to our mental, physical, and spiritual\nwellbeing.  The Compendium of the\nSocial Doctrine of the Church<\/em> teaches us that “Rest from work is\na right.”  As God \u201crested on the\nseventh day from all the work which he had done\u201d (Gen <\/em>2:2), so too\nmen and women, created in his image, are to enjoy sufficient rest and free time\nthat will allow them to tend to their family, cultural, social and religious\nlife.  (Compendium<\/em>, No. 284)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A summer retreat is a great way to renew ourselves and draw closer to\nGod.  We have some very fine Catholic\nretreat centers nearby.  I\u2019ll list a few\ngood ones you may want to consider:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our work is often demanding and rightly requires our full time and\nattention.  And surely the work of\nevangelizing our environments asks us to be ready and alert.  Alert to the many in need of Jesus\u2019 mercy and\nready to share what we, too, have received by grace.  If we fail to take care of ourselves, we risk\nlosing our Joy in the great mission Christ has entrusted to us – his disciples\nin today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hope this summer you may find time for some renewal of mind, body,\nand soul – if for only a brief time, to unwind, and unplug from the stress and\nbusyness of your lives – whether on retreat, vacation, or time spent with loved\nones.  Christ and His Church need us to\nbe rested, healthy, happy, and well.  But\nabove all, Joyful<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
